Brief Description

The roundtable participants discuss the main theses of Flexible Authoritarianism. Cultivating Ambition and Loyalty in Russia (Oxford University Press 2024), such as the resonance between authoritarian and neoliberal ideologies in today's comeback of strongman rule; the role of meaning-making processes, affect and cultural forms in legitimating both authoritarian practices and neoliberal techniques; as well as the complex relationship between loyal youths' individualist quests for change and the Russian government’s neotraditional and neoliberal-modernization ideals.
The diverse scholarly backgrounds of the roundtable participants (political science, anthropology, sociology and history) promises a conversation across disciplinary boundaries.
