Session Submission Type: Roundtable
This roundtable employs a feminist lens to examine a wide spectrum of media aimed towards women. We delve into the portrayal of women's lives, bodies, and societal roles across various traditionally feminized and media-driven platforms, including archival ephemera, magazines, novels, domestic radio and television shows, reality TV, B-list movies, advertising, and social media. These spaces are often overlooked in formal analysis and academic research, making them significant in understanding the critical discourse surrounding women. Drawing from research interests including gender and sexuality in contemporary media, folklore and cartoons, and Russia in archival and open scholarship, this roundtable prioritizes new and interdisciplinary questions about media scholarship in Russia and Eastern Europe. Given the limitations on archival and ethnographic research in Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus, we rely on new approaches in media circulation and digital accessibility to gain insight into the larger socio-political, economic, and cultural dialogues that are reflected in diverse forms of media.
Based on previous experiences at ASEEES, open, dynamic discussion on this topic draws more interest and facilitates productive discussions for both scholars in this specific field and those invested in the future of Russian, Eastern European, and Eurasian scholarship.
