Session Submission Type: Roundtable
The swift advancement of technology, the upheaval of conventional educational settings due to the pandemic, and a transformation in higher education from a teacher-centric to a learner-focused feedback conceptualization (Yu & Liu, 2021) are some of the most recent factors that inspired rethinking of the priorities and practices of assessment in language learning classroom. There is a need to discuss the evolving landscape of language assessment, including the development of reliable and valid assessment tools, standardized and placement testing, self-assessment, technology-assisted language assessment, feedback methods, alternative assessment practices and frameworks that foster more inclusive and reflective learning environment to promote learners’ language development.
This series of roundtables will discuss major developments in approaches to the assessment in language learning: state-of-the-art methods, innovative approaches, alternative grading practices. This roundtable will primarily focus on the most recent research for current assessment strategies, development in automatized assessment of proficiency, creation of the assessment materials, and ways of incorporating AI responsibly, ethically, effectively into the assessment process.
The format of the roundtable will allow for conversation between both participants of the roundtable and attendees, who will be able to share their hands-on experiences with current assessment strategies. A roundtable, instead of a panel, better facilitates a productive back-and-forth among participants, and it makes it easier to share and gather practical approaches and assessment frameworks.
