Session Submission Type: Panel
As it continues the conversation about the effects of modern-day propaganda, the panel also turns attention to counter-propaganda efforts. Marek Debnár focuses on pro-Russian actors in social networks in Slovakia following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Elena Sommer analyzes the Russian protest street art in light of the three tactical approaches adopted by the Russian propaganda machine (misperception, distraction, and disorientation). Katya Jordan’s paper homes in on Tchaikovsky’s ballet “Swan Lake” as an emblem of Russian political resistance. Finally, Victoria Hasko examines possible approaches to media literacy in a language classroom by turning attention to social media, user-generated content, and mass media.
