Session Submission Type: Roundtable
Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has indelibly reshaped Slavic and Eastern European studies. In what ways has it changed pedagogical practices and shaped learner expectations for studying the region? The scholars on this two-part roundtable will consider new approaches to classroom strategies, including curricular design and methods of assessment, with the aim of critically reexamining legacies of imperial thought and terminology. Topics will range from effective methods for decentering Russia and privileging a transnational perspective, to reconceptualizing artistic canons and geographical borders. The presenters in this session will reflect on teaching monograph and survey courses across multiple centuries (from the nineteenth century to the present day). By bringing together scholars from history and literary, cinema, and media studies, these roundtables aim to facilitate a conversation about how to address contemporary problems and foster student engagement with urgent questions in our field.
