This roundtable will explore how textbooks in English have presented Russian and Ukrainian historical narratives and how those have at times clashed. Mark Steinberg will discuss his textbook, A History of Russia, the 10th edition of which is forthcoming, while Serhii Plokhy will discuss his book, The Gates of Europe, which has been widely used for Ukrainian history classes. Frank Sysyn will talk about Mykhailo Hrushevsky’s multi-volume History of Ukraine-Rus’ and also deal with Ihor Sevcenko, Ukraine between East and West and the textbooks that are available for teaching Ukrainian history. Onur Isci will discuss A History of Russia: Peoples, Legends, Events, Forces by Catherine Evtuhov and others. Isci was Evtuhov’s graduate student while the textbook was being written and has used it in teaching.
