Research in Ukraine during Wartime: The State of the Field

Sat, November 23, 10:00 to 11:45am EST (10:00 to 11:45am EST), Boston Marriott Copley Place, Floor: 1st Floor, Boylston

Session Submission Type: Roundtable

Brief Description

We are proposing a roundtable discussion of “Research and Work in Ukraine During Wartime” about the practical and ethical challenges of conducting research in Ukraine with a focus on the period after the full-scale invasion. Our experiences include those of academics and those working with civil society organizations in Ukraine. This roundtable will draw on our own professional experiences including our experience organizing a speaker series in fall 2023 and spring 2024. This speaker series featured a variety of people working with Ukrainian civil society organizations. Invited speakers were primarily Ukrainians based in Ukraine. We see the speaker series—and in part the roundtable—as an important way to elevate Ukrainian voices. We will discuss questions including: 1) How can we study Ukrainian politics effectively? What are the most important issues and topics to study? 2) What are the ethical obligations and considerations of studying politics in Ukraine? 3) What are responsible ways to hire research assistants in Ukraine and conduct field research (including remote field research)? 4) How can and should the academic community support Ukraine?
