Session Submission Type: Panel
This panel addresses the role of civil society organizations in Ukrainian life today including perspectives from the academic community and from those working directly and on the ground with Ukrainian non-governmental organizations. Three of the papers examine the role of civil society organizations on politics in Ukraine. Sarah Wilson Sokhey considers how civil society organizations influence hromada level (local level) spending on education, healthcare, and social protection using a new dataset compiled by a research team at the Kyiv School of Economics. Yuliya Bidenko examines different models for recovery which connect the government, donors, civil society organizations, and local communities. Our discussant is Geoffrey Glenn, a member of the Peace Corps Virtual Service, who is based in Dubno, Ukraine. The chair of the panel is Olga Nikolska who works with ISAR Ednannia, a Kyiv-based non-profit organization.
