Russia has long sought to project power into and through the Middle East. it now appears that it will retain its bases in Syria. Moreover the Russo-Iranian treaty strongly suggests extensive military-intelligence cooperation and a possible base for Russia. Given Moscow's extensive support for Iran's terrorist proxies and search for still other bases e.g. Libya and Sudan it's clear that force plays an enormous role in Russian foreign policy here and we must understand it.
