This paper reads “The Name Day Party” in light of the war between self and world that informs Chekhov’s understanding of human intimacy. Placing the story within a line of related variations on disastrous hospitality, the paper traces Chekhov’s search for a productive resolution to the standoff between host and guest, in response to the perceived loneliness epidemic of his time.
