Love in the Time of Perestroika: American Scientists Respond to the Soviet Academic Crisis

Sat, November 22, 8:00 to 9:45am EST (8:00 to 9:45am EST), -

Abstract

The final decade of the Soviet regime delivered unprecedented opportunities and staggering blows to the Russian scientific enterprise. This paper looks back on the scientific exchange and collaboration program between the U.S.A and the U.S.S.R. that began in 1959 and… did not end in when “the Soviet Union awkwardly dismantled itself in the early 1990s.” Instead, the ties forged at the height of the Cold War in international scientific organizations grew into informal support networks and more bilateral projects—a memory written out of the current sentiment toward the Russian academic community.
