We will present the preliminary results of a survey- and focus-group project to be conducted in May-September of this year in Russia to understand the social basis for Russian military aggression, including the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. In our other work, we documented the blind and militant nature of Russian patriotism and the illiberal views of the Russians relative to residents of other post-Communist countries. The current project explores the roots of these attitudes by focusing on the link between the respondents’ or their parents’ experience of the early 1990s and their current views.
