This paper examines the interplay between literature and scientific discourse in Czech and Russian science fiction from 1877 to 1972, exploring how these texts—ranging from those belonging to the literary canon to those in its margins—both shape and reflect evolving concepts of science. By analysing intertextual relationships amid major socio-political and scientific shifts, the presentation highlights science fiction’s role as a key literary actor in constructing and redefining what it means to be modern.
