Mirrored Images: Stan Golestan as a ‘Propaganda’ Tool in Franco-Romanian Musical Relations

Abstract

The Romanian composer Stan Golestan (1875-1956), who emigrated to Paris at a young age, built up a respectable reputation both as a composer and as a music critic. In this paper, I analyze some differences in perspective based on discourses in the French and Romanian press coming from or related to this musician – the drift towards exoticism or exaggerated nationalism achieves a certain popularization, but at the same time brings with it distorted perceptions and provincialism.
