Nabokov’s Transparent Things provides detailed histories of particular objects, most memorably of a pencil. This presentation explores the depiction of things in Nabokov’s 1972 novel by turning back to two essays on objects from the 1920s: Nabokov’s own essay “Man and Things” (Chelovek i veshchi, 1928) and Sergei Tret’iakov’s “Biography of the Object” (Biografiia veshchi, 1929).
