A Post-Imperial Moment in the Russian Empire: Imperial Citizenship, National Empire, Minorities, and Hybridity After 1905

Abstract

This paper builds on the growing literature that reconceptualizes the binary opposition between empire and nation. Looking at the 1905 Revolution in the Russian Empire, the paper argues that the range of post-imperial political visions included both nationalizing and hybridizing trajectories. The history of debates and elaboration of the first electoral law of 1905 demonstrates the clash of these visions and the imprint of the concept of imperial (layered) citizenship.
