The paper is based on research on the experiences of adult civilian men as affected by limited mobility outside (due to the travel ban) and inside (due to the mobilization processes) Ukraine under martial law, which was introduced in response to Russia’s all-out invasion in 2022. In particular, it discusses men’s coping strategies, decisions, and relationships with the state from the perspective of contestations over citizenship and what it means to be a good citizen in times of war, the emergence of different categories of citizens, and (re)defined relationship between citizenship and territory.
