Returns to the Past: Memory Erasure in the Cinema of Central Asia (and beyond)

Thu, October 23, 10:45am to 12:30pm EDT (10:45am to 12:30pm EDT), -

Abstract

The paper addresses the impact of migration on characters in recent films from Central Asia (and Georgia). Protagonists return to their "home" countries temporarily or permanently to confront the memory of the (Soviet) past. They are faced with the loss of memory of their previous life; with a return that offers closure of the past; and with a shaping the space of (Soviet) memory in a post-colonial perspective.
