Becoming Decembrists: Temporality and Its Discontents seeks to understand the men and women at the core of the December 14th, 1825, uprising in Russia. This paper focuses on time, moving away from the usual linear conception of historical time and towards time as a category of analysis. Employing the works of Bergson and Deleuze, and engaging with diaries and letters as the most intimate sources, it explores the war of 1812 as a temporal divide, foundational for the lives and “selves” of the future Decembrists. The paper expands the temporal analysis to 1816, and the road to rebellion.
