Reading Eisenstein’s Nonindifferent Nature in light of the recent revisionist literature on Marx’s and Engels’ views of nature offers a new perspective on Eisenstein’s pioneering and underappreciated place in the genealogy of socialist ecocriticism. Such a reading also offers a roadmap for sorting through the disparate political passages that appear in his late works well enough to understand the evolution of his own socialism.
