The Ukraine Effect: Evolving Perceptions of Russia, China, and the West in Central Asia

Thu, November 20, 5:00 to 6:45pm EST (5:00 to 6:45pm EST), -

Abstract

This study examines how public attitudes toward foreign powers in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan have evolved following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Using survey data from the Central Asia Barometer, I find that favorable views of Russia declined in both countries after the invasion, with Kazakhstan experiencing a more pronounced and sustained drop. Interestingly, this decline was primarily driven by ethnic Russians rather than titular groups.
