This presentation will examine the role of the long narrative poem Veliki drug (The Great Friend, 1926) in Rastko Petrović's writings on the First World War, his mourning for its victims, and his understanding of the relationship between modern poetry and collective trauma. Veliki drug will be discussed as a core text from which his most significant later works have evolved.
