Although numerous journalistic investigations and a handful of academic studies have documented an unequal distribution of male mortality across Russian regions since February 2022, there remains no comprehensive country-level statistical analysis of the factors driving these disparities. This study addresses that gap by applying cross-sectional generalized additive models to official 2022 data on working-age male mortality rates. I examine how regional socio-economic conditions, inequality measures, and the status of indigenous populations relate to cross-regional differences in mortality. Preliminary findings indicate that socio-economic conditions are associated with variation in male mortality rates, underscoring the potential role of economic and social stratification in shaping regional mortality patterns.
