In today’s “global village” it is hard to imagine the oversized influence of foreign correspondents on East European audiences during socialism. Their reports and documentaries structured the public’s view of international conflicts, life in capitalist countries, the struggles of developing nations in the Global South, and the conditions in other socialist states in the region. Through archival research and oral history interviews with Bulgarian former foreign correspondents this paper conceptualizes the role of international journalism during socialism.
