Perestroika, the end of the Cold War, and the collapse of the Soviet Union posed peculiar challenges to Sovietologists in the years 1989-91, while at the same time offering great opportunities. This paper looks at the variety of responses by individual Sovietologists and major institutions such as Columbia’s Harriman Institute and Harvard’s Russian Research Center.
