This paper will be addressed to the following three questions. First, how did the Yugoslav praxis school understand what it is for art to be autonomous? Secondly, how are the ways in which the praxis school understood art’s autonomy related to their broader commitments to humanism? And thirdly, what possibilities for rethinking the autonomy of art are opened today by a critical engagement with the praxis school? Philosophers to be discussed will include Milan Kangrga, Gajo Petrović, Danko Grlić.
