The paper will discuss two important points: whether the imperial authorities played a major role in stimulating education or whether the Kazakh nomadic elite saw new opportunities in the social space of the Empire in sending their children to imperial institutions and universities. I will be based on an analysis of the social status and careers of graduates of educational institutes and universities who gained access to service in the colonial administration and result that did not match expectations of Russian power.
