Session Submission Type: Panel
This panel uses newspapers and journalism to study topics in Russian and Soviet history that may not present themselves through other sources. Papers discuss how the press sheds unexpected light on late imperial political culture, queerness in late socialism, and Soviet-American divided families. In addition to exploring these topics, the panel also considers uses of the press as a historical source for scholars with limited archival access or whose research engages with topics that are not well covered by other source genres.
