Session Submission Type: Book Discussion Roundtable
This roundtable discussion focuses on Guillaume Sauvé’s book, Suffering Victory: Soviet Liberals and the Failure of Democracy in Russia, 1987–1993 (Northern Illinois University Press, an imprint of Cornell University Press, 2025). The book explores the moral foundations of late Soviet liberalism and traces the intense debates surrounding a pivotal decision: the choice by most Soviet liberals to support the concentration of power in the hands of the Russian president, whom they saw as the embodiment of an enlightened elite. This decision, however, inadvertently undermined their own democratic project. The discussion will feature the author engaging with commentary from scholars across various disciplines.
