Session Submission Type: Roundtable
This roundtable brings together film historians and cultural studies scholars to examines the rich cinematic history of Ukraine's Donbas region. The participants will explore how filmmakers have portrayed the region’s industrial landscapes, social struggles, and cultural identity over time. From Soviet-era depictions to contemporary works, the panel will examine the evolving narratives, political contexts, and artistic expressions that have shaped Donbas's representation on screen. The participants will also discuss the first English language volume dedicated to the cinema about the region. The roundtable participants particpants will discuss the colaboration of four US (U. of Pittsburgh, Penn State U, Indiana U, Bloomington, William & Mary) and one Ukrainian university (Taras Shevchenko National U. of Kyiv) involved in the translation, editing and the production of this volume. Among the film discussed in the collections are Dziga Vertov's Enthusiasm, Leonid Lukov The Great Life, Vasily Pichul's Little Vera, and Sergei Loznitsa's Donbas.
