The environment for legal rights related to publishing, licensing, and open access is taking a new phase characterized by ever more sophisticated—and subtle – ways to seize individual property rights that support scholarly, intellectual, and creative activity and have done so for centuries. Under the banner of “transformative” use, “transformative” access, and “transformative” agreements, we see the global proliferation of technology platforms and corresponding ideological platforms designed to promote profit for industry while convincing scholars and the public of the benefits to humanity that result from exploitation of scholars. How do scholars protect their rights? The roundtable format is intended to promote debate and lively discussion.
