Session Submission Type: Book Discussion Roundtable
Paul Robert Magocsi is the author of the first Carpatho-Rusyn popular history (The People from Nowhere: An Illustrated History of Carpatho-Rusyns, 2006), the first comprehensive history (With Their Backs to the Mountains: A History of Carpathian Rus’ and Carpatho-Rusyns, 2015), the first history of the North American diaspora (Our People: Carpatho-Rusyns and Their Descendants in North America, 1984), and the first encyclopedia (Encyclopedia of Rusyn History and Culture, 2002). His The Art of Carpathian Rus’ (2025) is now the first comprehensive history of Carpatho-Rusyn art, including painting, sculpture, architecture, drawing, decorative arts, and design. This roundtable will analyze the text’s approach to defining the canon of Carpatho-Rusyn art and critique its lacunae with presentations by scholars in art history, cultural studies, and history.
