Session Submission Type: Panel
2025 marks the 1100th anniversary of the alleged crowning of Tomislav as the first king of Croatia. The event is seen as a seminal point in the history of Medieval Croatia which continued to exist as a kingdom under the rule of its native dynasty until the early 12th century. During most of the past two centuries, the medieval Kingdom of Croatia was often mythologized to promote Croatia's distinctive cultural background, such as Glagolitic which was widely used during the period of rule by Croatian kings, to promote Croatia's distinctive political personality within multi-ethnic states and to act as a basis for new artistic creations. The papers to be presented in this panel will examine these examples of historical memory as well as those to be employed during 2025 as the government, institutions and organizations in the Republic of Croatia memorialize this significant event in Croatia's past.
