Session Submission Type: Book Discussion Roundtable
This panel explores the complex intersections of gender and national identity as presented in Gender and Nation in East Central Europe: An Uneasy History. he book presents an interdisciplinary examination of how gender and nation—both deeply contested categories in East Central Europe—have been constructed, negotiated, and legislated during the formative period of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
This panel will feature discussions from several of the book’s authors alongside an outside reader who will provide an external critique and broader contextualization. Together, the panelists will reflect on the interdisciplinary approaches taken in the volume, the challenges of navigating national and gender narratives in historical research, and the broader implications for understanding identity formation in East Central Europe. The session invites dialogue on how the book contributes to ongoing debates in gender studies, nationalism, and East Central European history.
