Session Submission Type: Book Discussion Roundtable
Historians do not believe that history repeats itself. However, the dramatic change in American policy towards Russia that has taken place since Donald Trump took office is often referred to as the 'new Munich'. Taking inspiration from P.M. Majewski's book about the Munich Crisis (The Munich Crisis of 1938: Political Turmoil on the Brink of the Second World War, Bloomsbury Academic 2025), the panellists will discuss the mechanisms of appeasement and analogies between the events of 1938 and the current situation of Ukraine and whole East and Central Europe. Such a discussion seems very timely, especially after the recent "Munich Security Conference". The panel is co-organized by the Institute of Central Europe, Lublin, Poland.
