Session Submission Type: Roundtable
Vladimir Putin came to power in 2000 determined to restore Russia's great power status. At first, he hoped to work with George W. Bush to establish the kind of world structure that had existed during the Cold War. When that failed, he sought to (re)create Russian hegemony in the post-Soviet space and to push into the Middle East and Asia. Now, after three years of war in Ukraine, Russia has to recalibrate its fortunes--never abandoning its aspirations for world status. One crucial question is whether, in light of the war and its foundering economy, Russia can continue the push outward.
The participants on this round table will each address this question of echoes of the past and of greatness in their respective regional areas of expertise. Given the fluidity of international events, a round table is the most appropriate format for this very important discussion.
