Session Submission Type: Roundtable
The roundtable discusses the relationship between archives and the stakes of Russian/Eastern European history from the Cold War, through the archival gold rush, to reckoning with new research directions. It approaches the theme from 3 perspectives. It asks what methods we need to have conversations that go beyond the simplified vision of Russia/Eastern Europe as the "other" of the West. It considers the effects of the abundance of archival and digital sources, as well as of the new restrictions on access. It raises questions about conscious pedagogy on graduate and undergraduate levels about the historians’ craft. The roundtable format will thus move beyond comparing personal experiences of research and facilitate a more interactive and open-ended reflection about the state of the field.
