Session Submission Type: Panel
This panel explores the multifaceted role of creativity in Slavic language instruction, examining both its broad pedagogical significance and its specific interpretation within the ACTFL proficiency guidelines as “creative use of language.” Panelists will discuss innovative strategies for fostering creativity at all proficiency levels, with a focus on beginning and intermediate classrooms.
Key questions guiding the discussion include: How should creativity be defined in the context of Slavic language teaching? How does ACTFL’s concept of “creative language use” manifest in daily classroom practices? What pedagogical approaches effectively cultivate creative thinking, even at the most foundational levels? How can instructors integrate creativity despite curricular and time constraints?
Panelists will share concrete methodologies, activities, and assessment strategies that encourage students to use language creatively. The discussion will emphasize how creativity supports student engagement, enhances motivation, improves retention, and accelerates progress toward higher proficiency levels.
This panel seeks to provide attendees with both theoretical insights and practical tools to integrate creativity into their teaching, regardless of institutional setting. By reframing creativity as an essential element of language learning rather than an optional enrichment, this session aims to contribute to the advancement of Slavic language pedagogy in the 21st century.
