Session Submission Type: Roundtable
Issues of exile and relocation from Russia seem newly relevant today. The roundtable will look at various waves of Russian emigres who left for the US, Europe, and South America. What did they find, what community did they create, how did they assess their status vis à vis their homeland? Importantly DP emigres (post-WWII) will be included in the mix, and participants will compare and contrast experiences of writers, poets, translators, journalists and painters, focusing on their memories from home and the ways in which they produced, reproduced, and adapted them for new contexts.
