Book Discussion: Collectivization Generation: Oral Histories of a Social Revolution in Uzbekistan, by Marianne Kamp

Sat, November 22, 4:00 to 5:45pm EST (4:00 to 5:45pm EST), -

Session Submission Type: Book Discussion Roundtable

Brief Description

Collectivization Generation, based on Marianne Kamp's collaborative oral history research in Uzbekistan in the early 2000s, recounts rural understandings of Sovietization processes, from the early 1920s through the 1930s. Elderly Uzbeks who had spent their lives working on kolkhozes tell us about how their kolkhoz formed, about violent exclusions of kulaks, about hardships from famine and orphanhood, and about some of the moments of modernization that they found inspiring or transformative. The discussion will engage with Central Asian history, with interpretations of Sovietization as colonialism, and with the viability of seeking voices from below in contexts where long-term repression deters certain stories and encourages others.
