Session Submission Type: Roundtable
Yugoslavia’s role in the Non-Aligned Movement has become an especially productive framework for contemporary scholarship on the region. Yet, historically, this “worlding” was not universally celebrated. This roundtable focuses on examples of Yugoslav intellectual and cultural production, as well as movements from below, that were somewhat skeptical of Non-Alignment—with standpoints ranging from mild apathy to outright hostility. What reasons did these actors have for being ambivalent towards Non-Alignment, and how were these viewpoints expressed? The roundtable format will allow speakers to discuss the diversity of responses to Non-Alignment in Yugoslavia and to explore the extent to which NAM skeptics shared other political commitments.
