Little critical attention has been paid to the gender politics that shaped the early years of the Greenpeace. The paper will examine the work of Greenpeace co-founder Bob Hunter (1941-2005), a brilliant, troubled, writer whose “mind bombs” catapulted the Vancouver based organisation into the international arena in the 1970s. It situates the heightened masculinity of the voyages of Greenpeace I and Greenpeace V in the context of Vancouver’s emerging women's liberation movement, and asks how gender politics shaped Hunter’s understanding of “mother earth,” and his reading of whale sentience.
