Outdoor Campuses in Higher Education: Stakeholders, Sustainability, and Sequestered Land

Abstract

Our panel concludes with Professor Juan-Miguel Arias who highlights their project researching outdoor/satellite campuses of higher-education institutions in the Mountain West region of the US. Their research explores these campuses’ equitable access, sustainable longevity (economic and environmental), and relationships to land, indigenous communities, and the LandBack movement more broadly.

Bio: Dr. Juan--Miguel Arias (he/él) is an Assistant Professor in the Education Department at Colorado College, where he teaches courses in Environmental Education, Educational Psychology, and Critical Environmentalism. In his research, Dr. Arias uses insights from educational psychology to address questions of environmental and educational equity. Specifically, he examines culturally-responsive teaching practices enacted in outdoor settings and their influence on student learning.
