Are Student-Athletes Addicted to their Identity? The Development and Validation of the Athletic Identity Addiction (AIA) Scale

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument, the Athletic Identity Addiction (AIA) scale, exploring the relationships between addiction and athletic identity. Results identified five factors (Relapse, Withdrawal, Salience, Mood Alteration, and Life Control) that were established through EFA/CFA analysis, establishing a connection between addiction and athletic identity.
