Fat and thin envelopes: Understanding college application data from national surveys

Abstract

ELS:2002 is an integral data source on college applications and admissions. Yet, to date no one has demonstrated that these data are nationally representative. I benchmark ELS:2002 to other admissions data sources. Preliminary findings suggest that ELS:2002 overstates admissions rates, particularly at selective institutions, with important implications for research.
