Cultural Capital and the Admissions Essay

Abstract

This paper presents exploratory results for computational text analysis of admissions essays submitted to a large public university. Using topic modeling we categorize these essays and demonstrate that those with an outward research focus beyond school or family, representing high cultural capital, are correlated with increased likelihood of admissions.
