Minority Doctoral Stages to Completion: A Closer Look at the Gaps in the Socialization Process

Abstract

Racial and ethnic minority students only account for a small fraction of doctoral degrees awarded. I argue that the racial bias founded in the socialization process of doctoral programs is contributing factor to minority attrition. Pierre Bourdieu Social Capital theory and Vincent Tinto’s graduate persistence were the theoretical lens used.
