Developing a Hyper-documented Consciousness (HDC): How Family Support Can Increase First-Generation Latino College Student Persistence

Abstract

Using Tinto’s Student Departure, LatCrit, and theory of hyperdocumentation, I examine how first-generation Latino college students (FGLCS) belonging to mixed-status families develop a hyper-documented consciousness to persist in higher education. This new concept explains how many FGLCS endure institutional racism and other challenges in predominantly White institutions.
