The Underrepresentation of Black Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Fields in the Twenty-First Century

Thu, October 30, 1:30 to 3:00pm, Marriott St Louis Grand, Landmark 1

Description for Program

This paper explores the participation of African and African American women in the twenty-first-century STEM space. The participation of Black women in STEM fields have always been an issue of concern among researchers, the government and organizations. The number of Black women who are represented in STEM disciplines and careers is ridiculously low and is seen as an issue of social justice and economic advancement in the United States. Black and ethnic women experience various obstacles and challenges in STEM fields primarily because of their gender and race; leading many to pursue other careers that are “fit” for women of their race.
