Description for Program

ASWAD MENTORING EVENT

Are you a department chair or program director in Black Studies/Africana Studies or plan to lead such an academic unit in the future? Consider taking part in this hands-on workshop designed for leaders of Black Studies units. In this current time, Black Studies units must navigate a largely hostile federal government and may also face state legislatures and local campuses that seek to withdraw resources or even shutter existing programs and departments. The workshop will focus on outlining some of the shared challenges we face, identifying specific issues germane to your own units, and highlighting strategies for advocating for Black Studies departments and units both within your universities and in larger communities.
The workshop will be facilitated by Yolanda Covington-Ward (current chair of the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and previous chair of the Department of Africana Studies at the University of Pittsburgh). A second co-facilitator is still to be determined.
